Why hire me?

I attended the University of California, Hasting College of the Law and practiced law for over 20 years in the San Francisco Bay area, where I did complex contract litigation and divorce mediation as well as estate planning. I limit my practice in Rhode Island to estate planning because I love to help people with a difficult but necessary legal aspect of their lives. I have also been an adjunct professor at Roger Williams University since 2003.

I will meet with you in your home or office anywhere in Rhode Island during the day, in the early evening, or even on a Saturday. I value your time as much as you do.

Inexpensive software programs are available. Why pay an attorney more?

You can find hundreds of software programs, websites, or self-help books that will give you a generic, one-size-fits-all will or revocable trust. However, they:

  • May not reflect current Rhode Island laws.
  • Cannot take into consideration your family's unique situation and goals.
  • May lead to family disagreements or even litigation in the future.
  • May leave your heirs with an avoidable tax bill or attorney’s fees.

Most importantly, if a DYI is not properly signed or witnessed, a court will not accept it and your estate will pass to your "heirs at law" as if you had no will.

These products are aimed at high volume sales, not your individual needs. Also, you might not understand what you’re signing and wind up with an estate plan that you did not intend.

Why does it have to be so complicated? I don’t have an “estate.”

Not only is the law complicated, today even middle-class people’s finances and families are complicated. We own homes, some own second homes in other states, and complicated retirement savings. We have second marriages and blended families. State and federal tax laws are complex. Family dynamics are powerful. Only an experienced attorney can help you understand the issues and sort through the problems to come up with the unique plan that is right for you.

I prepare all documents myself and am there to make sure the signing is done properly. Your file will never be handed off to a paralegal. I specialize in quality, not quantity.
